826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. 826DC is a chapter of 826 National, the network of nonprofit writing and tutoring centers co-founded by award-winning author Dave Eggers. In 2013, the board approved a three-year strategic plan through a process that Richard led and facilitated. Working closely with the then Executive Director (Joe Callahan, now ED of the Writer's Center,) he interviewed key stakeholders, undertook and synthesized research, especially into the needs of school age children in the District and the other players and competitive forces in 826DC’s field, and undertook an analysis of the effectiveness and financial contribution of each of the main programs. He also drafted the plan. 826DC worked to this plan diligently through 2015 and surpassed the main goals for children served and income raised during this period. In December 2015, Brewster facilitated a board and staff review session to assess progress in depth and begin the preparation of the next iteration of the plan, which 826DC will develop in time for the start of FY2017.
