Strategic planning; organizational structure; board development; ED coaching; staff training
Richard started working with TRC in the summer of 2014. He first worked with the Executive Director, Board and Staff to develop a theory of change, an explanation of how its programs combine to achieve its mission, which is to improve the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading. He then helped develop a strategic direction for TRC, its "Path to Greater Impact," which envisages a significant expansion outside its Northern Virginia base over the next three years.
TRC then retained him to advise on and support it to develop the capacity to deliver this growth. This two year assignment, funded by the Meyer Foundation, has involved staff organization and development, coaching the Executive Director and board development. Results so far include: a more efficient staffing structure, greater role clarity and greater collaboration between members of staff; newly adopted board values and a board development plan. TRC has recently opened the first of the planned expansion sites in Montgomery County, its second in Maryland.
